A supreme study in contrast, taking you to two very different environments where plants and birds found nowhere else on earth reveal an evolutionary epic of the islands.

At Pu'u La'au, you will be whisked to nearly 7000 feet on the western side of Mauna Kea, the tallest volcano in the World, where you will disembark to take in the spectacular views and roam a sub-alpine dry land forest, home to numerous endemic birds. For the ornathologists, this includes the endangered palila and the bryani sub-species of elepaio. Although the terrain is somewhat uneven, the hiking is easy. The main interest is in sighting the critically threatened palila, but there are two other endemics of note to be found: the Hawaii amakihi, and the local species of the Hawaii elepaio (noted for the white feathering on their heads).

Next stop is the Pu’u O’o trail, a “cloudforest” habitat located at 6,000 feet on the northeastern slope of Mauna Loa on the windward side of the island. Forest birds will serenade you as you wind through three to four miles of sometimes rough lava trail, crossing over the 1855 and 1881 lava flows. The guides will be concerned with spotting the endangered akiapola'au, oma'o (Hawaiian thrush), i'iwi, and apepane, among others.

Although principally concerned with bird-watching, the mind is often distracted by the spectacular vistas and verdant forest making it a secondary activity! For those who are interested in nature on any level this is a superbly executed tour providing a rare opportunity to witness plants and birds found nowhere else on earth.

Molokini Kayak & Snorkel from Maui

Lying just a few miles off the coast of Maui is the majestic crater fragment of Molokini. Some 230,000 years old, this mysterious crescent is surrounded by stunning blue waters, home to sea turtles, reef sharks, eels, octopus, a plethora of colourful tropical fish and even the occasional white tip shark.

Your day starts early with a gearing up session as you fit yourself out for the journey ahead and the guides take you through a 15-20 minute briefing that covers everything from proper paddling techniques to snorkeling tips and safety reminders. It’s then time for the main event; a 3-4 mile journey by kayak to the island!

Upon arrival you will paddle through the inside of the crater itself and head around to the rear side to rendezvous with the accompanying power boat. After losing the kayaks you will at last get to fully appreciate the incredible 150 foot underwater visibility as you snorkel the entire width of the craters back wall.

Oahu Shark Dive

For a thrilling wildlife encounter with sharks, go on the Oahu Shark Dive and take home memories to last a lifetime. Leave Oahu's North Shore and enter the shark cage for an up-close-and-personal encounter with the ocean's top predators, or watch from onboard as they circle your boat!

Departing from Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor on Oahu's beautiful North Shore, you may see Hawaiian green sea turtles, dolphins and humpback whales (depending on the season) during the 3 mile (5 km) cruise to your shark-filled destination.

Then the shark cage is floated on the surface of the water and you have the option to get inside for an underwater encounter you'll never forget. The water is cobalt blue and visibility is approximately 200 feet (60 meters) or more so you can actually see the sharks come up from the deep.

If you choose to enter the cage, you'll spend approximately 20-30 minutes in the water viewing these magnificent creatures up close. The cage holds two people very comfortably and can hold up to four people at a time, depending on the weather conditions.

If you do not wish to enter the shark cage, there will be ample surface viewing opportunities as the sharks circle the boat.

The sharks commonly sighted on the Oahu Shark Dive include the gray reef, Galapagos, sandbar and hammerhead, ranging in size from 5 feet to 15 feet (1.5 meters to 4.5 meters). These sharks will swim only inches away from the cage!

The safety of passengers is the number one priority and a safety briefing is given at the start of the tour. You may bring your own mask and snorkel although fins are not necessary. Masks and snorkels are also provided on the vessel. You are encouraged to bring an underwater camera as you'll be able to get some of the best photographs of sharks possible anywhere in Hawaii.
